WORLD CINEMA
Over the last few years it seems that, at the cinema at least, the choice we, the audience, have is becoming increasingly narrow. Barring a tiny,
handful of exceptions, if the film wasn't made in Hollywood then we won't get to see it. Even if it's a British film.
Thanks to the ever growing Asian population of the UK, Bollywood is gaining popularity in this country - sadly, the same's not really true for world cinema generally. And, if we're honest,
the output from Hollywood seems to be increasingly little more than eye-candy with no substance and/or comedies that require the audience to lower their intelligence to
the level of the 'comedic idiots' on the screen.
Except the audience isn't so stupid that they need every little nuance of the film's story explaining to them over and over again. Spoon-feeding them every
little nugget of plot just in case they're too stupid to understand. Thankfully, there's a whole world of cinema that doesn't make films under the assumption
that the people watching it are dribbling idiots. Nor do these 'other' films rely on repeating every conceivable cliché because that's what made money last week.
Sadly, when you mention world cinema to your average film watcher, their immediate impression is of films that have ridiculously stupid plots - such as the sex lives of ping pong balls -
that are also plagued by the dreaded subtitles, that everyone knows ruins the enjoyment of watching films. It's not surprising that you get that reaction from most people
when you remember that they've never had the pleasure of being exposed to non-Hollywood films.
Worse still is that when someone does try to explore the larger arena of world cinema, they either have absolutely no idea where to start their journey or
they're exposed to the 'real film fan', for whom anything other than Godard or Truffaut is 'mindless crap for the mentally retarded.'
Well, we're here to help you discover a whole new world of cinema without having to deal with pseudo-intellectuals. What you'll find below is a list of films
that have been suggested by a large number of friends who are not 'films buffs', who don't work in the industry and who never went to film school. They're just
normal people who like films. The list contains everything from the funniest of comedies to incredibly heart-moving dramas. This list has been compiled with the
sole intention of introducing normal film fans to excellent films that they probably would never have been exposed to either on TV or at the cinema.
All of the films are listed under their UK release title to make finding copies of the DVDs easier. If a film contains extremely high levels of violence or
sex, this is mentioned under the title.
BRITAIN - ASIA - AUSTRALASIA - MIDDLE EAST - EUROPE - BOLLYWOOD
Can we recommend some specific non-British films that are perfect introductions for those who have read the list but still don't know where to start?
OF COURSE WE CAN.
